JR Girskis awards Coach Castro at Illowa Scouting America Gala

One of the finest leaders in our community was honored at the Illowa Scouting America Gala on April 27, 2025, as Coach Paul Castro received the prestigious Elbert K. Fretwell Educator Award.

The Elbert K. Fretwell Award recognizes outstanding educators who dedicate themselves to positively impacting young people through leadership, character development, service, and mentorship — values that closely align with the mission of Scouting America.

Coach Castro has long been recognized throughout the Quad Cities area for his commitment to students, athletes, and youth development both on and off the field. His leadership, encouragement, and dedication have helped shape countless young people in our community over the years.

The Illowa Scouting America Gala brought together community leaders, educators, volunteers, and supporters from across eastern Iowa and western Illinois to celebrate individuals who continue making a lasting difference in the lives of young people.

Awards like the Elbert K. Fretwell Educator Award recognize more than professional achievement — they honor individuals who lead by example and inspire future generations through service, mentorship, and integrity.
