5. Insert Replacement vs. More Extensive Opening Work Can Change the Price

Some replacement projects use the existing opening and portions of the existing frame structure. Other projects require more extensive removal or rebuilding around the opening.

If there is water damage, deteriorated wood, unusual trim, old siding conditions, or structural problems, the project may involve considerably more labor than a straightforward replacement.

That is one reason an estimate completed after careful measurement and inspection is more useful than a rough price based only on the number of windows.

6. Exterior Trim Can Be a Hidden Difference

Look carefully at how each contractor plans to finish the exterior.

Will existing trim remain? Will new aluminum trim be fabricated? Will damaged wood be covered or replaced? How will the window integrate with siding, brick, stone, or other exterior materials?

A clean exterior finish can require significant craftsmanship and labor.

If one proposal includes complete exterior finishing and another does not, the two estimates should not be compared solely by total price.

7. Interior Trim and Finishing May or May Not Be Included

Labor should not be treated as an inconvenient number attached to the product.

Window warranties are not identical.

A homeowner may say, "I have 12 windows."

But 12 identical double-hungs are very different from a project containing eight double-hungs, two large picture windows, a three-lite slider, and a bay window.

Window size, style, location, access, glass, trim, and installation conditions all affect the project.

15. Very Low Estimates Deserve Questions

A low estimate is not automatically bad.

A higher estimate is not automatically better.
